About Us
Valhmor Borg entered the tomato industry in 1955 under the company name of Vernons. His first venture involved the processing of tomatoes in the locality of Marsa (Malta). The end product was a premium tomato spread, commonly referred to by the locals as “kunserva”. The main reasons behind Vernons’ superior tasting product are the traditional Maltese recipe used and the fact that every tomato is carefully selected and handpicked. The warm Maltese climate helps to cultivate and ripen the tomatoes naturally. The company immediately occupied an important position in the market, by supplying an authentic product, healthy for all the family and quickly became an integral part of Malta’s food culture.
In 1969, Valhmor’s son, Martin, took over the business. Due to Martin’s passion for good food products, he further diversified Vernons’ product portfolio by branching into other areas of food distribution. This involved the production of processed vegetables, most notably peas. “Royal Star” peas quickly gained the public’s recognition and became a brand leader. Martin also had the
strategic vision to further Vernons’ tomato-based products under the brand name “Vera”. Amongst these products one may find “passata” and tomato pulp, also known as “polpa”, which is typically used for pasta sauces. In 1999 “Vera” added another typical Mediterranean delight to its range of products known as “caponata”. “Caponata” consists of mixed vegetables in a tomato sauce. Since product quality was of paramount importance to Vernons, it was inevitable that each of their new products gained the industry’s trust and respect. Hence, their belief that:
“Production in limited quantity guarantees quality”
In 1999, Vernons further expanded their activities beyond the food processing sector and started importing various food and brands to complement their ever increasing product portfolio. Today, Vernons remains a privately-owned, family-run business. It is now run by Dominic Borg, son of Martin. The family’s enthusiasm for the company and its products continues to be passed down through the generations. This is the driving force behind Vernons remarkable success and remains the key to their development.
